The Monleale by Luca Canevaro is a red wine from Piedmont made from Barbera. After fermentation in steel, the wine ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, acquiring deep spicy notes, body, and structure. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, supported by soft and velvety tannins, which give a long, intense, and persistent finish.
The Monleale by Luca Canevaro is a red wine that is appreciated for its ability to combine round fullness and lively freshness. The Monleale subzone is part of the broader denomination of Colli Tortonesi, an area in southeastern Piemonte included in the province of Alessandria. Wines that bear the geographical indication Monleale must be produced with a minimum percentage of 85% Barbera and require aging of at least 20 months, of which a minimum of 6 must be spent in wood.
Luca Canevaro Colli Tortonesi Monleale comes from only Barbera grapes grown following the principles of certified organic farming. The vines, about 40 years old, are located between 300 and 350 meters above sea level and are planted in predominantly clay soils. The grapes are hand-harvested and are then carefully selected before red winemaking with alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and 15 days of maceration on the skins. Once the fermentation process is completed, the mass rests for another 6 months in steel and is then transferred to French oak barrels for 18 months of aging. Bottling follows, along with further resting in glass until market release.
To the eye, the Barbera Colli Tortonesi Monleale from organic producer Luca Canevaro shows an intense garnet red color. From the glass emerge aromas of cherry, berries, and bramble flowers, accompanied by light spicy hints. Warm, intense, and elegant is the taste, supported by excellent freshness and smooth tannins. The finish is long with fruity and spicy sensations consistent with the olfactory profile. Due to its remarkable fullness and structure, this Barbera demands pairings of some importance such as preparations based on red meats or aged cheeses.
