The “Blau & Blau” by Jermann is a bizarre and very intriguing red. The name alone is enough to pique curiosity, but when one discovers which varieties are used in the blend, for a true wine-lover it becomes almost a must to taste this wine. The creativity of the Jermann winery pays homage to the newest member of the family, Sylvia Tunina, through this label, which has made its debut on the market since the year 2000. “Blau & Blau” also serves as a tribute to the roots and family history. The protagonist of this red is indeed the Franconia grape variety – also known as Blaufränkisch – cultivated by the Jermann family since the distant 1800s. In this red, the noble Pinot Nero, also known as Blauburgunder, serves the first grape variety, elegantly escorting it and enhancing its characteristics. From the union of these two varietal identities, Blaufränkisch and Blauburgunder, the “Blau & Blau” by Jermann is born.
Jermann “Blau & Blau” is composed of 95% Franconia grape variety and 5% Pinot Nero grapes. They originate from not very deep soils, formed by sedimentation and accumulation of material from Monte Fortino, with vineyards exposed to the southwest. Following the harvest, which is carried out entirely by hand, the bunches are transported to the winery and vinified. After alcoholic fermentation, there follows a maturation period in small French oak barrels for about 16 months.
The “Blau & Blau” has an intense ruby red color. Its bouquet ranges from the pleasantness of notes reminiscent of fermenting must, to those typical of the underbrush, also passing through hints of aromatic herbs. On the palate, a good body is perceived, enveloping and soft, marked by a nice freshness and the typical minerality of Collio Friulano. A good balance and a nice persistence allow this particular expression of red grapes to leave an excellent memory.
