The Etna Bianco ‘Villa Baroni’ from the Sicilian winery Carranco effectively reveals the characteristic savory and mineral vein of Etna wines. The Carranco wine project was born in 2018 through the collaboration between two important Italian wine realities: Borgogno and Tornatore. The Etna Bianco ‘Villa Baroni’ is made with only Carricante, a white grape variety that symbolizes the territory, whose name derives from the dialectal expression “u carricanti”, referring to its characteristic abundant production that filled entire carts. However, by limiting its vigor, Carricante gives rise to some of the most prized white wines in the entire Italian wine scene. The label features the stylized profile of the volcano that forms the letter “n” of Etna.
‘Villa Baroni’ Carranco Etna Bianco is a 100% Carricante grown within the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in Contrada Carranco, on the northern slope of the volcano. The vines rest on volcanic soils rich in mineral substances, located about 500 meters above sea level. In the winery, the alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled steel and concrete tanks, and the subsequent maturation process occurs in concrete tanks on the fine lees for several months.
The Carranco Etna Bianco ‘Villa Baroni’ presents itself with a straw yellow color with golden reflections. Complex hints of grapefruit, mandarin, white peach, green apple, hawthorn, and aromatic herbs characterize the aromatic context, interspersed with iodized notes and whiffs of flint. Intense and enveloping the entry on the palate, with pronounced freshness that combines with a incisive savory trail anticipating the persistent and powerful mineral closure. Although this label is very pleasant right from the start, it is capable of withstanding several years of further aging in the bottle.
