MALVASIA SCHIOPETTO 2023 DESCRIPTION

The Malvasia di Schiopetto is one of the great wines of Collio. The variety of Malvasia grown in Friuli, also known as Istrian, stands out within the large family of this ancient Greek-origin grape for its rich and intense profile, but less aromatic and soft compared to the Malvasia di Candia grown in other regions. The bouquet expresses mainly aromas of ripe yellow fruit and hints of aromatic herbs from the territory. On the palate, it is broad and enveloping, with beautiful persistence and a fresh finish, closing with saline and mineral notes typical of the terroir of Collio.

The Malvasia wine comes from the vineyards of the Cru di Capriva, the original core of the Schiopetto estate, which also manages vineyards in the prized areas of Zegla, Pradis, and Oleis. The ancient Greek-origin grape has been present for centuries in Friuli and is now part of the historical varieties of the region. The splendid sunny exposures, protected by the Julian Alps from the cold northern winds and mitigated by the gentle breezes of the nearby Adriatic Sea, have proven perfect for a slow maturation of the with rich and intense aromas. The origin of the oecenic soils, characterized by the presence of Flysh or “ponca” in Friulano, derived from sedimentation of sandstones and limestones on ancient seabeds, are draining and rich in mineral substances. The manual harvest usually takes place in the first weeks of September. The grapes are pressed very gently and the free-run must is sent for fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 16 °C, lasting about 10-12 days. The wine completes its journey by aging on the lees for about 8 months in steel and finishes aging with 5 months in bottle.

The white Malvasia represents a piece of history of Friulian viticulture. The ancient Greek vine, named after the port of Monemvasia in the Peloponnese, has found the ideal conditions for producing intense whites with a Mediterranean profile in the sunny exposures and poor soils of Collio. The wine presents itself with a bright, luminous golden yellow color. The aromas evoke floral hints, aromas of ripe yellow fruit, and notes of spontaneous herbs from the scrub.Mediterranean and iodized sensations. On the palate, it has a good structure, is warm, with rich and juicy fruit, beautifully balanced by freshness and a decidedly salty finish.

When to drink
Wine good to drink now, but that can have a beautiful evolution after resting for a while in your cellar
Glass
Medium open goblet
Perfect for young and medium bodied white wines which don't require excessive oxygenation to open. The opening, slightly tighter than the body of the glass, favors the concentration of aromas towards the nose, enhancing the perception of aromas and limiting the dispersion
