The Merlot “Sintesi dei Capitoli” from the Ronco del Gelso winery is a robust and concentrated red wine produced in Cormons, in the province of Gorizia, in Friuli Venezia Giulia. An expression obtained from pure Merlot grapes, an international variety that has adapted well to this territory, coming from vines cultivated with high planting density and low yields, using the espalier method and guyot pruning on shallow, skeleton-rich soils characterized by little clay but red due to the presence of iron oxides. The winery, owner of about 26 hectares of vineyards, is a family-run business managed by Giorgio Badin, who is a great experimenter and who, thanks to the application of eco-sustainable criteria, has brought Ronco del Gelso to national and international prominence in just a few years.
The “Sintesi dei Capitoli” Merlot is produced with hand-harvested grapes that are carefully selected at their peak ripeness. The bunches, brought to the winery, are gently crushed and destemmed before undergoing the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel containers at controlled temperature with long macerations on the skins, of about 20 days. The must is then separated and the skins pressed, after which the wine remains in aging for at least 24 months in 25 hectoliter oak barrels, before being bottled and ready for marketing.
The Merlot “Sintesi dei Capitoli” from Ronco del Gelso presents itself visually with an intense ruby red color with slight purplish reflections. On the nose, complex aromas of ripe red fruit and berries emerge, including cherry, blackberry, and raspberry, floral notes of dried flowers, and spicy hints of pepper, licorice, and cinnamon. On the palate, it is full, rich, enveloping, and deep, characterized by an elegant tannic structure and a long spicy finish with a slight briny note at the close. This Merlot from the Ronco del Gelso winery is ambitious, aristocratic, and of great finesse, all to be savored.
