PINOT NERO 'BARTHENAU - VIGNA SANT'URBANO' HOFSTATTER 2020 DESCRIPTION

The Pinot Nero Riserva “Vigna Sant’Urbano” represents one of the most prestigious and intense interpretations of the famous French-origin grape that, in the extraordinary cru of Barthenau Vigna Sant’Urbano from the Hofstatter winery, seems to have reached its maximum expression.

The Vigna Sant’Urbano is located in the Barthenau estate, situated in the small Alto Adige locality of Mazzone, in the province of Bolzano. Some of the vines are over 65 years old, and the soil is a conglomerate of clay, lime, porphyry, and fine gravel. The grapes harvested here are placed in small crates and then pressed. 25% of them is fermented, without destemming, in barrel, while the remaining 75%, after a day of cold maceration, ferments slowly for 10 days at controlled temperature. Once the winemaking process is completed, a maturation is planned that unfolds in three phases: a resting period of 14 months in barrique, blending, and resting in a single large oak barrel for another 7 months, followed by bottle aging for 12 months.

The Pinot Nero Riserva “Vigna Sant’Urbano” Hofstatter reveals its great density and concentration starting from an intense ruby red color. The bouquet unfolds slowly, discreetly, revealing aromas of sour cherries, raspberries, geranium along with light whispers of vanilla and spices. On the palate, it proves to be lively, complex but well-balanced, with a convincing tannic structure and an exceptional aromatic concentration. An important and princely red wine, the exaltation of pure Pinot Nero.
