Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes ‘Castelnau de Suduiraut’ is a sweet botrytized wine with a complex and seductive aromatic profile, designed to be enjoyed divinely even in youth. Chateau Suduiraut is a historic estate founded back in 1580 by Leonard de Suduiraut, and its wines have always been considered among the finest Sauternes available. The ‘Castelnau de Suduiraut’ is not the “younger brother” of the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes Premier Cru Classé, the flagship label of this prestigious Bordeaux winery, but rather it is a wine with its own unique identity, whose development was decided from the outset with the selection of specific vineyard parcels.
The ‘Castelnau de Suduiraut’ Sauternes from Chateau Suduiraut comes from a blend of Semillon and a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc, grape varieties grown about 50 kilometers south of Bordeaux, west of the Garonne River, on soils rich in clay, sand, and pebbles. The proximity to watercourses, cool nights, and morning mists in autumn followed by sunny days create the ideal conditions for the development of noble rot. This desired rot is due to the fungus botrytis cinerea which dehydrates the grapes, synthesizing peculiar aromas that are the foundation of the uniqueness of botrytized wines. The harvest is done by hand with multiple passes to exclusively collect the bunches where the rot has developed optimally, excluding those affected by rot. The wine then ages for about 15 months in barriques, 25% of which are new, and is finally bottled with a high sugar residue.
The Sauternes ‘Castelnau de Suduiraut’ Chateau Suduiraut is a bright golden yellow. On the nose, intense varietal notes of candied fruit, honey, caramel, and sweet spices are perceived, combined with a pleasant citrus nuance. Warm and enveloping on the palate, with pronounced sweetness supported by an excellent savory-mineral vein in a persistent finish.
