SAUVIGNON 'SOTTOMONTE' RONCO DEL GELSO 2023 DESCRIPTION

The Sauvignon “Sottomonte” from the Ronco del Gelso winery is a white wine fragrant, fresh, and savory. It interprets very well the best characteristics of this semi-aromatic grape variety of French origin, which is cultivated in the hilly area that descends from Cormons towards the Isonzo plain. It is a rather rich and intense version of Sauvignon that, thanks to aging in wood, offers a full and mature taste, with pleasant fruity notes of beautiful aromatic richness and taste persistence.

The “Sottomonte” Sauvignon is the result of the desire to create great wines in a land that has always been suited for it, such as Friuli Venezia Giulia. The Ronco del Gelso winery cultivates about 26 hectares in the territory that stretches from Cormons to the Isonzo River. The climate can benefit from the protection of the mountains to the north and the mild breezes from the Adriatic Sea that rise from the south. The soils are poor and very draining, consisting of little earth resting on a deep substrate of pebbles and stones of ancient fluvial origin. These particular conditions make the vine naturally low-yielding in quantitative terms, but capable of providing clusters of high quality and aromatic concentration. The alternating cover cropping of the inter-rows, a vineyard management respectful of the environmental ecosystem, and extremely careful work in the winery allow for the creation of labels that are a faithful mirror of this particular Friulian terroir.

The Sauvignon “Sottomonte” is one of the flagship whites of Ronco del Gelso, a perfect blend of varietal typicity and terroir. At the end of the harvest, the grapes undergo a brief cold maceration. After gentle pressing, the must is sent for low-temperature fermentation with selected yeasts. The wine ages for one year in oak barrels of 25 hectoliters before being bottled. The color is straw yellow with bright reflections. The olfactory profile recalls aromas of citrus, grapefruit, ripe yellow fruit, and herbal notes. On the palate, it is intense with a pronounced aromaticity, which unfolds towards a mid-palate of soft and rich fruit, well balanced by a finish of lively freshness, which closes on pleasantly savory sensations. It is an ideal white for those who love harmony, balance, and complexity.

When to drink
Wine good to drink now, but that can have a beautiful evolution after resting for a while in your cellar
Glass
Medium open goblet
Perfect for young and medium bodied white wines which don't require excessive oxygenation to open. The opening, slightly tighter than the body of the glass, favors the concentration of aromas towards the nose, enhancing the perception of aromas and limiting the dispersion
