The Vermentino Nero is a new limited edition from Lunae Bosoni, produced in a few bottles, which was born as a tribute to a nearly extinct local grape variety. In fact, this variety, genetically very similar to its white berry counterpart, seemed to have been lost after the war. However, the plant, thanks to the foresight of some producers, survived in some vines along the Tuscan coastal area of lower Lunigiana, at the border with Liguria. This red wine is part of the winery's project aimed at the enhancement of native varieties of the territory, starting precisely from this red obtained from Vermentino Nero and a small balance of red grapes from Lunigiana.
The Vermentino Nero wine is much more than just a simple project; it is the first chapter of a story that tells of the richness of Italian ampelography and its enhancement. In no other part of the world, in fact, is it possible to admire such a wide variety of native grapes, and Vermentino Nero is certainly one of the many pearls, rediscovered, enhanced, and vinified, to truly understand how much this ampelographic heritage needs to be preserved and protected. In the vineyard, the grapes are hand-picked and selected before being brought to the winery. Fermentation takes place in 20 hl wooden barrels, and aging lasts in wood for another 6 months.
The Lunae Vermentino Nero lights up in the glass with a bright and deep ruby red color. The olfactory profile is rich, typical, and vibrant, where hints of berries, wild fruits, field flowers (violet and rose), and Mediterranean herbs emerge, which gradually give way to hints of spices, such as juniper, cloves, and pepper, along with toasted notes against a marine background. The tasting is flavorful and of character, with great freshness and dynamism, a fine tannic texture, and an almond-like finish. It pairs well with white meat dishes, fish stew, or fine cuts of not too flavorful red meat.
